Hope to see you at the meeting!!
I grew up in Bognor, Ontario and graduated from West Hill Secondary School in Owen Sound, Ontario in 1970. As a high school athlete, I placed 3rd in OFSAA Cross County in 1969, 3rd in Canadian Junior Cross Country in 1969 and 2nd in OFSAA 3000 metres 8:35.70.
I attended the University of Iowa from 1970 to 1974. At Iowa, I captained the track and cross country teams in my senior year. I received Big 10 medals with top 15 finishes in cross country, 13th in 1972 and 14th in 1973. In track, I was a consistent top 10 finisher in Big 10 competition in the three-mile event with a P.B. of 14:02.
After graduation, I relocated to London, Ontario and joined the London Pacers in 1975. I continued to compete on the road and track until around 1982 when I retired from competitive running. Around 2008, after a lengthy break from running, I started training again with participation and fun as a goal. I rejoined the London Pacers at that time.
My running personal bests are:
3000 m – 8:26
5000 m – 14:35
10,000 m – 30:35
Half marathon – 1:07
Marathon – 2:21:18
A highlight of my career was finishing 8th in 1976 in the Canadian Olympic trials at the Ottawa National Capital Marathon. This was my first marathon. I ran 2:22:18. In this race, I was entered as a London Pacer.
Now, as an over 65-year-old runner, my goal is to be as fit and competitive as possible. Last year (2016), I was the first over-65 finisher at the Grimsby and Owen Sound half marathons in 1:50 and 1:52 respectively.
The most important aspects of running for me are the people, places and journeys that I encounter.
