Over the years the club and its members have given time and money generously to support the running community.
Club members can be seen volunteering at most races and meets in the area. They provide finish line, marshalling and water table assistance for the Forest City Road Races and staff a water table for the Springbank Road Races. They volunteer for school track and field and cross country meets at all levels from elementary to university. Several members are Athletics Ontario officials and have worked meets up to national championships. The club’s races, the Galloping Goose Mile Night, Turkey Trot, Pacers Classic Road Races and Vulture Bait Trail Races are put on by runners for runners, as you can see by the $5 and $10 entry fees for the Turkey Trot. Furthermore, members have spoken to various groups on topics related to running and walking and have introduced countless Londoners to the sports.
Charity Bear Run
The London Pacers have been organizing the Charity Bear Run each year on the first Sunday in December. The club members wear holiday hats and bells for a run or walk around Springbank Park. Donations in the form of cash or cheque are collected and used for a worthwhile cause as selected by the Pacers Executive. Past recipients have included The Salvation Army, The Boys & Girls Club, and C.C. Carrothers School.
The club has donated funds to help athletes train for and travel to Olympics, World and Canadian Championships. For several years it provided bursaries to Fanshawe College cross country runners and gave to the London Distance Banquet fund to help out young local athletes. It has provided cross country spikes to a local high school (with the generous assistance of Runners’ Choice). It has given money to such worthy causes as the Danny Kassap Memorial Fund and Wesley Korir’s Kenyan Kids Foundation. It has filled a car with Shoes for Kenya.
Several years ago the club was the recipient of a Trillium Grant to buy equipment for putting on races. Since then its large display clocks have been used by races and charity events all over the area.
Through the 40+ years of its existence the London Pacers Running Club has made a significant contribution to the community.
